Chapter 17: Abram's POV: The Roof

Abram's POV

The roof door sticks in wet weather, and I have shoulder-checked it open for nine years.

I carried two folding chairs and a thermos up the last flight at ten to midnight.

The harbor lay below us with the ferry lights moving slowly across it.

I set the chairs by the low wall and then didn't sit in mine.

She came out at midnight exactly, in the grey sweater and a wool coat, with the blue folder still under her arm.

She looked at the chairs.

"You planned this."

"I planned a thermos."

"What's in it?"

"Bad coffee. I never learned to make it."

She laughed, short and tired, and sat down.

I poured her a cup, and she held it in both hands and watched the water.

"Thank you for tonight," she said. "For standing at the door. For not saying a word when he walked past you."

"I wanted to say several."

"I saw."

I sat down beside her, close enough that our sleeves touched, and I let them.

"You said you had something to tell me," she said.

I had rehearsed it for a week and it had worn smooth, and now it came out rough.

"I read your book," I said.

"Most people have."

"After my wife died. A friend left it on my porch with a note that said, this helped us." I turned my cup in my hands. "I read it at the kitchen table at two in the morning, and I was angry before I finished the first chapter."

She was very still.

"Why?"

"Because of one line. 'Stay, work on it, there is always something left to save.'" I made myself say it plainly. "You wrote that, and I thought, that's the glibbest advice I've ever read. It keeps people in rooms where nothing is left."
