Chapter 20: A Long Way Off

Emmeline's POV

The district attorney's office called on a Tuesday and asked if I would object to a witness coming back to town.

"Which witness?" I said.

"Ms. Ormsby. She has something for sentencing, and she asked to give it to you first."

I said I would meet her at the bus depot, because it was a public place with a clock and a security guard.

Alastair drove me there and stayed in the car, with the baby in her seat beside him.

When I got out, he reached across and put a hand flat on the small of my back through the door.

"I'll be right here," he said.

"I know."

"Rule nine. If you ask me to leave, I leave."

"I'm not asking."

I felt his hand there all the way across the lot.

The depot was a low brick building with a row of gray lockers along one wall.

Locker 214 had its door hanging open.

Bridget stood beside it with a single suitcase and a paper cup of coffee she was not drinking.

She was eighteen weeks along, and the gray coat no longer closed.

She looked well, rested, with color in her face.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

"What do you have?"

She opened her purse and took out a flat green book with a rubber band around it.

"My notary journal. You write down every stamp. Date, name, what it was."

"I know what it is."

"He came to me in March with two papers." She slid the band off. "One was the decree. The other was a quitclaim deed for your house, with your signature on it."
