Chapter 9: Ninety Witnesses

Alastair's POV

Brennan came to work on Monday at 8:40, in a pressed shirt, with a coffee in each hand.

He seemed to think the weekend had not happened.

I watched him from my glass office as he crossed the third floor, nodding at the sales team and handing the second coffee to an intern.

Ninety people worked on that floor. Every one of them had seen the brunch video.

Nobody said hello.

I came out and stood in the aisle in front of his desk.

"Brennan."

"Alastair." He gave me the same easy smile he had given me for six years. "I know it's a lot. Look, let me explain..."

"Security is bringing a box."

The smile stayed on his face for another second.

"For what?"

"Your desk."

He laughed once. "You're not serious."

"I'm firing you."

Someone's keyboard stopped. Then another, and another, down the whole row.

"On what grounds?" Brennan said, lower. "Personal leave. You signed the statement. You put it in writing."

"That was before I read the company card statement."

I took a folded page from my jacket and laid it on his desk.

"The Harbor Inn," I said. "Fourteen months of it. And a lease on Wren Street, billed to the Rainsford Group as client lodging. Thirty-eight thousand dollars."

His face changed then, all at once.

"That's a misunderstanding."

"Theft usually is."

I kept my voice even, because anger would have given him something to push against.

"You'll hand over your badge and your laptop. You will not take anything off this floor except what a guard carries to the elevator."
