Chapter 14: Aris's Kitchen
I told him in the kitchen, with the stove on and the window dripping.
Aris's flat was one room and a bedroom and a fire escape with a pot of dead basil.
He sat on the one good chair with the saucepan in his lap while I said it.
I said the wedding night, and the key in my slip, and the chair I had dragged out of Nikos's reach.
I did not leave out the cold room.
I did not leave out the Lincoln.
My brother listened with his bent hands around the pot.
When I stopped he did not say anything for a long time.
"You chose him," he said.
"Yes."
"You knew who he was."
"I've known who he was for nine years, Aris.
"I've worn the key for him."
He set the pan on the stove and turned off the flame.
The window was black behind him and the radiator clanked.
"I'm not going to tell you not to," he said.
"I don't have a right.
"You held the drawer.
"I never said what that did to you."
"You were on the floor."
"I was eighteen and I was on the floor, and my little sister was against a drawer with a man's hand on her arm," he said.
"Do you think I forgot?
"I just never knew how to be the one who got to be angry first."
I put my hand over my eyes.
It took me a moment.
"I want him to say it to you," I said.
"Not to me.
"To you.
"In this kitchen.
"He has said it to me, in the dark, with his hands tied, and it was for me, and it was for him.
