Chapter 19: Obstacle Detected
I held the meeting in the bathroom, because that was where everyone already was.
Sterne stayed in the tub with a towel over his lap and his glasses back on.
I wrapped myself in a robe and sat on the closed toilet.
Jax arrived at the door in his own robe, eating pretzels.
"I heard a vacuum," he said. "I came to see who it was."
"Sit on the floor," I said. "Willem has the floor."
Willem had set the laptop on the marble counter and pulled up a map of the penthouse.
It showed four floors in gray outline, with thin blue lines wandering through them.
"Every night at one the vacuum runs the house," he said. "It scans with a laser, and it keeps a log of everything it bumps."
"Excuse me," Jax said, in a perfect copy of its voice. "Obstacle detected."
"Thank you, Jax."
"I'm just saying it's got range."
"It runs the third floor at one-thirty," Willem said, and traced a blue line with his finger. "It runs the stairs. And at three it does the foyer and the foot of the staircase, because that's where the dirt collects."
"Linnea said she fell around seven past two," I said. "She said she lay at the bottom until six-thirty, when Phillip found her."
"She did."
"So at three the vacuum should have found a woman."
"It found a dish," Willem said.
He tapped the screen.
At 3:01 a.m. the blue line stopped at the foot of the stairs.
Beside the stop, in small letters, the log read: Obstacle, ceramic, heavy. Rerouted.
