Chapter 12: The Third

Marisa's POV

Odette's face came back so fast I almost missed it going.

"Marisa, honey," she said, looking past Alec's shoulder. "You're up. Good."

"Take your folder and go," I said.

"I only wanted to help him."

"You wanted him to say I never called."

"I wanted," she said gently, "for everyone to get through Saturday." She pulled the folder back through the gap in the door. "Nine o'clock, my office. I found something in the files. You'll want to see it before Mitchell does."

She turned and went down the steps with the dog at her heel, the lavender trailing after her.

Alec shut the door and leaned his forehead against it.

"I shouldn't have told her about the recording," he said.

"You should have told her an hour ago."

"I know."

He drew a folded slip of paper from his pocket and held it out.

I read it in the gray hall light, in his shirt, with my palms stinging.

*Redirect Authorization. Authorized: J. Bradbury.*

"The signature went on first," he said. "The text was printed after, in black. And look at the back."

I turned it over.

I felt the dents of two other signatures pressed through the paper.

"Mitchell signed these in a pile," Alec said. "Blank. A week before the fire, maybe more. I think he had no idea what was going to be printed on top of them."

I looked at him.

"He was in Seattle," I said slowly. "He said it. He was in a hotel."

"Yes."

"Then he never ordered the helicopter."

"I don't think so."

"And he never read my texts."

"No."

I sat down on the arm of his couch, because my legs had stopped working.

For eleven days I had hated one man.

I had built every hour of grief on top of him.

Now I had to decide who he was.

"I need to see the pile," I said. "The real one. The binder where she files what he's signed."

"Odette said nine."

"So I'll be there at nine, and she won't."
