Chapter 17: The Dress
On Tuesday morning I told Terrence over burnt toast that I was going to the gala.
He put his coffee down very carefully.
"He's going to name Taryn's daughter as the heir in front of three hundred people," he said.
"He wants you to watch it."
"Then I'll watch it," I said.
"I'm going whether he sends me a card or not."
Terrence looked at me for a long moment, and then he said, "Then I'm going too."
"I'd have been hurt if you weren't," I said, and stole his toast.
The principal had extended my leave through the end of the reporters, and the reporters had finally found something else to chase.
So at eight o'clock I walked back through the front doors of Marlow Bay Elementary, with my bag on my shoulder and my stomach in a knot.
The hallway was quiet.
I opened my classroom door.
Twenty-two eight-year-olds were standing behind their desks in perfect silence.
On the whiteboard, in purple marker, somebody had written WELCOME BACK MISS NORDQUIST.
