Chapter 22: After the Applause

I found Taryn in the hotel lobby, on a velvet bench beside a potted palm.

The girl was asleep across her lap with her boots dangling over the edge.

Taryn had kicked off her heels.

Her mascara had run down both cheeks again, and this time she was not in the mood to hide it.

I sat down on the other end of the bench.

Terrence stayed by the revolving door with his hands in his pockets, close enough to see and too far to hear.

"I came to gloat," said Taryn hoarsely.

"Go ahead."

"I didn't come to gloat," I said.

"I came to tell you three things, and then you can go."

She didn't answer.

"The first is that she will never be harmed," I said.

"Not by me, not by Terrence, not by Joan."

"She's Prescott's daughter, and none of what you did was her fault."

"Joan is going to see her every week, and you'll be at the door when she comes."

Taryn's chin trembled.

"The second is that you won't get a cent of Prescott's," I said.

"Not for you, and not for her."

"He left it to me, and I'm keeping it."

"The third is the money you can't ask for," I said.
