Chapter 10: The Chair, Again
Patrick read the contract at my dressing table on Thursday night, every page of it, and he did not say a word.
He folded it in thirds and put it in the inside pocket of his jacket.
"Sunday," was all he said.
On Sunday the dining room was set for six, and the judge and the doctor were back.
Ivy's chair was drawn out, with its glass and its candle.
Beatrix said grace for the one who was not with us.
I watched Patrick's hand on the cloth, and it was steady.
We got through the soup.
We got through the fish.
The judge talked about the dedication on the fifteenth.
The doctor said what a comfort it would be for the family.
Beatrix inclined her head. "She would be so touched."
Patrick put down his fork.
"Mother," he said. "I have something for you."
He reached into his jacket and took out the contract folded in thirds.
He laid them beside her plate.
Beatrix looked at them.
For the first time since I'd met her, she did not touch her pearls.
"What is that?" the judge asked.
"A contract my mother drew up with a lawyer, between this house and the woman sitting next to me."
