Chapter 15: Garden City
My tía opened the door in Garden City on Saturday night and looked Patrick up and down, slowly, from boots to hair.
"He's old," she said, in Spanish, to me.
"He's forty-one."
"He has grey."
"He has hair, tía," I said. "Be nice."
"I'm always nice," she said in English, and she took his hand in both of hers. "Come. You eat."
He ate.
She put down rice, black beans, and a platter of her tamales, and every time his plate got low she filled it.
He ate everything, with the careful look of a man being tested.
My aunt's kitchen was the size of a closet, with a plastic cloth on the table and a Virgin on the shelf over the stove.
Patrick sat in a folding chair with his knees against the table.
He kept looking at the ceiling, at the wallpaper, at the little wooden crucifixes along the doorframe.
I knew what he was doing.
He was reading the building.
"The beam," he said at last. "Over the door. It's heart pine."
"My husband put it in," said my tía, startled. "In 1994."
"He did a good job. It's holding the whole wall."
She stared at him.
Then she looked at me with a new expression, and I knew that we had won.
"Do you go to Mass?" she asked.
