Chapter 5: Halsted Street

The building on Halsted Street was a brick walk-up with a buzzer panel and a smell of cat.

"Stay in the car," I told Cesare.

"No."

"You said that on Friday too."

"And I meant it on Friday," he said, and climbed the stairs behind me.

Apartment 4B had a doormat that said WELCOME HOME.

I held the brass key in my hand and did not use it.

I knocked.

A chain rattled on the other side, and then the door opened four inches.

Fiora looked out at me with swollen eyes.

She had on a sweatshirt and no makeup, and her hair was tied up in a rubber band.

She looked younger than she had in the red dress.

She looked at me.

She looked at Cesare.

Then she took the chain off and stepped back.

"Come in," she said. "I thought you might."

The apartment was one room with a kitchenette.

A man's black jacket hung on the back of a chair.

On the counter stood a bottle of Nico's whiskey, three quarters empty.

I stood in the middle of the floor.

I realized I had come all this way and had no idea what I wanted to say to her.

"How long?" I said.

"Since March." She sat down on the edge of the bed with her hands between her knees. "He told me you two were over. He said the wedding was a business thing that your father forced on him."

"And you believed that."

"I wanted to." She looked up. "Ren, I swear I didn't know he'd do Thursday. He told me to stand by the door and press my thumb on the pad when he nodded. He said it was a joke for the guys."
