Chapter 10: The Loft

The marshal drove me up herself on Monday, after three hours of sleep in a motel by the airport.

I wore her windbreaker over my green dress the whole way.

Sandro was waiting at the yard gate with the dog.

He didn't run to the car.

He stood there with his hands jammed in his jacket pockets.

The marshal got out first.

"She's all yours," she said. "Alarm codes are on the fridge. If anybody you don't know drives down this lane, you call me before you do anything heroic."

"I don't do heroic."

"You threatened to put a Vescari in a cooler."

He looked at me. "You told her that?"

"I tell her everything now. I signed a paper."

The marshal left.

Then it was just the two of us, and the dog, and the box of ledgers.

And ten years.

"Come on," he said. "I'll show you the palace."

The loft was one long room over the boat shop, with windows on both ends.

One end looked at the harbor. The other looked at the lane.

There was a woodstove, a kitchen counter and a table built out of an old hatch cover.

A couch had a blanket folded on it.

The bed was in an alcove with a curtain instead of a door.

Everything smelled like cedar and coffee.

Pinned over the sink there was a row of index cards in a tin frame.

I knew that handwriting.

Slanted, all capitals, the S's backward.

"Your mother's recipes."

"The marshals mail them up one at a time. Two a year." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm up to the braciole."

"She used to make me braciole when your father wasn't looking."

"I know. He always counted them."

I laughed. He watched me laugh.

"The bed's yours," he said. "I'll take the couch."

"Sandro, you're six foot two. Your feet will be in the stove."

"They've been in worse."

That first day, I didn't know what to do with my hands.
