Chapter 8: The Ledgers

There was a banker's box by the door, half full of baby blankets still in their plastic.

I dumped the blankets on the floor.

I put the nine ledgers in the box, one on top of the other, the flannel shirts on top of them.

They were heavier than I expected.

Nine years shouldn't weigh so much.

The back hall led two ways. Left to the kitchen and the service lane. Right to the garden room and the front door.

The service lane was quiet. Nobody would see me.

That was the problem.

If I went out the back with a box, I was a thief.

One of the soldiers would catch me in the lane, and nobody at that table would ever hear about it.

If I went out through the garden room, every man in Renato's family would watch me carry it.

I turned right.

The talk in the garden room stopped one chair at a time.

I walked along the table with the box on my hip.

Past the wives. Past the capos. Past the consigliere, whose hand stopped halfway to his cigarettes.

Gia half rose from my chair.

Renato didn't get up.

He sat back and folded his hands on the tablecloth.

"Cara," he said pleasantly. "Those aren't cannoli."

A few people laughed. Not many.

I stopped at the head of the table, beside him.

I set the box down on the white cloth, next to his plate.

I took the top ledger out and opened it.

"October fourteenth, two years ago," I read. "Eleven thousand, cash, from the Atwells restaurant. Initials, P.M. Delivered by the back door."

One of the capos put his glass down.

I turned a page.

"March. Forty thousand through the trucking account, invoiced as fuel. Fuel for trucks that were in the shop. Initials, R.V."

I looked up at the table.

"There are nine of these," I said. "One for every year I kept your books. Every Friday envelope. Every truck. Every name at this table is in here at least twice."
