Chapter 13: Her Plan

The door closed behind Ugo and the yellow blanket.

My arms stayed curved around the space where she had been.

"We can take her tonight," Stefano said from the doorway. "I have forty men outside."

"She is one day old, and there are guns on every window of that house."

I heard my own voice, and it was flat and steady.

"I won't sign anything," I said. "Not tonight, not ever. But I won't storm a house with my daughter inside it."

"Then what do you want to do?"

"Walk out of here without his permission."

I went down the hall past the clinic wing, past the cold room I would be coming back to.

Rocco's men stood at the front doors.

Nobody touched me, because the foyer was full of women.

The Dons had gone home, but their wives had not.

The white-haired wife sat on the stairs with a cup of coffee, and six capo wives stood around her in evening dresses gone limp at the hems.

They had all heard the doctor in the dining room.

They all looked at me, and none of them could find anything to say.

"Child," the white-haired wife said. "Sit down."

"I'd rather stand."

"Then stand."

I stood in the middle of the marble where Fabiola had worn the pearls.

"Nine years ago I woke up from my appendix surgery and my husband told me I would never have a baby," I said. "He sat by my bed and held my hand while I cried."

Nobody moved.

"He had already taken my eggs. The girl he brought home carried my daughter. I held her an hour ago. Rocco took her out of my arms."

One of the younger wives started to cry.

"He told every one of you that I was unwell," I said. "He told your husbands to treat me as unwell."

The wife of the capo who had stood up for me in the dining room put her hand over her mouth.
