Chapter 10: Four Seconds
We watched the video at noon on the inn's terrace, in the sun, with a pot of tea going cold between us.
I had told myself I would do it alone.
Instead I propped my phone against the sugar bowl and Brennan sat beside me with his chair turned so our knees touched.
"You don't have to watch it," he said.
"I do."
I pressed play.
The picture jumped, and then there was the Wellfleet pier at sunset, gold on the water and gold on the boards.
I was in my yellow birthday dress, laughing at something Todd had said.
Todd had his back to the camera for a second, and then he turned and dropped to one knee on the wood.
I put my hand to my mouth on the screen.
I watched myself say yes.
I watched Todd stand and kiss me, and heard a thin, happy sound that I realized was Shea, shrieking behind the phone.
"I'm shaking," Shea's voice said on the recording. "Hold on, I'm shaking."
