Chapter 6: The Fever Night
Sorcha came back to herself in pieces.
Heat first, then the smell of cedar smoke and iron, then a voice above her saying her name.
She was on a bed she did not know, and her shift was soaked through.
Her mother was kneeling beside her, white to the lips.
"Sorcha. Stay with me."
"Too hot," Sorcha said. Her tongue felt thick. "Take it off."
"It is the bond-fever, Luna," the healer said from the foot of the bed. He was a small man with ink on his fingers, and he sounded afraid. "It has taken hold in your blood. I have given you everything the herbs can give."
"Then what else?" her mother demanded.
"There is one thing." The healer would not look at the Alpha, who stood against the far wall with his gloved hand shut tight. "A fever like this feeds on the missing tether. An Alpha's skin can stand in for it. Skin against skin, through the night, until it burns out."
"No," Sorcha's mother said.
"It is that or she does not wake, Warrior."
Her mother's jaw worked, and she said nothing.
Sorcha tried to push herself up and could not.
"I can't ask," she whispered. "I can't even say the words. You promised I would have to ask."
"You did not promise anything," Brogan said.
His voice was rough. He crossed the room in three strides and went down on one knee beside the bed, and he did not touch her.
"Luna. I swore on my name. You are asking me to break it, and you cannot say yes."
