Chapter 5: Who Posted It

The next night Silver Creek held a dinner to celebrate the Alpha sitting up in bed, and I went because I had a question.

Caius came with me and walked a step behind my shoulder, hands in his pockets, exactly as the terms said.

Every table in the hall was full.

The elders sat at the long table under the antlers, with Dane in the Alpha's chair and a place set beside him that nobody was using.

I waited until the plates were down and the room was happy.

Then I stood on the bench of the nearest table and said, "I need everyone to listen for two minutes."

The talking stopped.

"Somebody posted a photo of me asleep on a bus," I said. "I took that photo myself, in March, and I sent it to exactly one person."

Dane set down his fork.

"Marlo," he said gently. "We've been over this. It was a stupid joke and it's done."

"I'm not asking you," I said.

I held up my phone so the front tables could see the screen.

It showed a message thread, dated the third of March.

My photo, and under it, in my own words: Look at this disaster, I look like a drowned possum.

The name at the top of the thread was Tabitha Greer.

A murmur went around the hall.

Tabitha was at the kitchen pass-through with a dish towel over her shoulder, and her face did something quick and careful.

"Hon, that was months ago," she said. "I deleted it. Somebody must have gotten into my phone."

"Show us your phone," Winnie said, from the back.
