Chapter 13: The Moon Court

Kieran watched him go until the stairwell door swung shut.
Then he looked at me.
"He can't make you kneel," he said.

"You weren't awake once."
The Grand Mating Hall looked the same as it had a month ago.
The candles. The silver flowers. The stage.

Tristan and Genevieve sat below the stage on a bench.
Marcus sat beside them with his hands folded.
Through the high windows, the full moon was rising.
Kieran's knee pressed against mine.
It was burning hot.
I glanced at him. There was sweat along his hairline.
