Chapter 6: Still His

I touched the letters.

The stone was cold, and the grooves were rough, and my mother's hands had made them.

"She knew," I whispered.

"She carved it the summer you were born," the King said. "She brought you here in a basket. I was there."

I turned to look at Kieran.

He was already looking at me.

"I didn't know," he said. "I swear I didn't know any of this in the ravine."

"Then why did you say I was yours?"

"Because you sat down."

Four days later, I sat down again.

This time it was at the King's long table, in a gray silk dress that fit me.

Silver pins held my short hair off my face.

The whole court was there for Homage week.

Every pack in the north sent its Alpha to kneel to the King before the next full moon.

Fifty candles. Crystal glasses. Wolves in velvet and pearls.

And me, in the seat at Kieran's right hand.

"That's her," someone whispered down the table. "The kitchen girl."

"I heard she scrubbed toilets."

"I heard she bit a Beta."

A tall she-wolf with black hair and diamonds at her throat leaned toward me.

"Hello," she said, not offering her hand. "I've been sitting in that chair for six years, darling. Is it comfortable?"

"It's fine, thank you."

"Well." She smiled at the table. "I suppose after a mop, anything is."
