Chapter 16: Who It's For

Marlo's POV

The doors at the back of the hall boomed shut behind Keeley's father.

Nobody spoke for a long moment.

Then the dean turned to the two professors, and the three of them put their heads together over Keeley's notebook.

Keeley stood alone at the podium, with her folder against her chest.

She looked at the audience, and nobody looked back at her.

Then she looked at me.

"Marlo," she said, very softly, so that the microphone almost missed it. "You know I never meant for it to go this far."

"You posted it from another account," I said.

"We were friends."

"You brought me soup so you could find out which nights my room was empty."

Her mouth opened.

For once nothing pretty came out of it.

The dean cleared her throat.

"Ms. Chauncy," she said. "The panel has seen enough. Your essay and your notebook are withdrawn from consideration, and you are disqualified from the Harlow Transfer Scholarship. The college will write to you about the rest."

Keeley didn't cry.

She set the notebook down, picked up her gray folder, and walked down the center aisle with her head up.

The students leaned away from her on both sides.

A girl in a pastel sweater near the back stood up, hesitated, and sat down again.

The doors boomed a second time.

I breathed out, and my knees went.

Micah caught my elbow from behind and put me in a chair.

"You've still got an interview," he said. "In forty minutes."

"I know."

"Are you going to be sick?"

"Possibly."

"Do it in the corridor. You're the only one who can read your own essay."
