Chapter 10: The Lodge
The Hot Spring Lodge stood in a pine wood half a day south of the Pavilion.
The first thing Seon-woo did when they arrived was send everyone away.
He told the six disciples of their escort to ride back to the mountain.
He told the lodge keeper to take the cook and the maids to the village for seven days, with full pay.
"A groom wants his privacy," he said.
The keeper bowed and fled with a very red face.
By sunset the lodge was empty.
It was a low timber house with deep eaves, built around a pool of steaming green water under the open sky.
Stars were coming out over the pines.
Ja-heon stood on the veranda with his sword in his hand and waited to be told what would happen to him.
Seon-woo had not spoken a full sentence to him since the milepost.
"Come into the water," Seon-woo said.
Ja-heon put his sword down.
Seon-woo was already in the pool up to his chest, with his hair floating around him on the surface.
Ja-heon stripped, stepped down the stone stairs into water so hot it hurt, and sat across from him with his arms on his knees.
"Tell me," Seon-woo said.
"All of it, this time.
"The Cult.
"How many.
"Where.
"Who commands."
Ja-heon told him.
It was easier than he had feared, because Seon-woo asked.
The valley was three days south by a marsh road that only its own people could read.
Half of them were orphans and the rest sick or old, and perhaps eighty could fight.
They had no gold and no sect to feed them.
