The carts Sun-ok had sent were already waiting at the end of the marsh road.
Forty children climbed into them, and eleven of the sick, and the Lord on a litter with his eyes shut.
Seon-woo had not asked the valley's permission.
He had stood on the veranda of the burned long house and said, "My steward has beds for all of them," and nobody had argued.
By the fifth evening the cedar gate of the Pavilion rose over them, white against the dusk.
The disciples on the wall looked down at the wagons and the thin faces under the canvas.
They looked at Ja-heon, riding at Seon-woo's stirrup in his black coat.
No one cheered.
The Hall of the Crane was lit for judgment.
Six elders sat in a row on the dais under the paper cranes that still hung from the wedding, grey and stiff, with their hands folded.
Sun-ok stood at the side with her arms crossed over her sash and her mouth shut tight.
Seon-woo walked up the length of the hall.
Ja-heon followed one step behind and to the left, where he had stood for three years.
