Chapter 22: The Vote
Eskil's POV
The first thing I knew was the smell of woodsmoke and green wool.
The second was pain.
It sat across my chest in a hot bar, and every breath pulled it tighter.
I opened my eyes and saw white sky, and Maija's face above me.
She had blood to her elbows.
She had my head in her lap on the Moot Stone's long bench.
Her coat was spread under me, and her braid hung over her shoulder.
"There you are," she said.
Her voice shook.
"I won?" I said.
"We did. Don't talk."
A needle went through my skin, and I hissed.
Aino was bent over my ribs with a bone needle, working the edges of the wound together with black thread.
"Hold still, boy," she said. "Silver doesn't knit. I'll do it the slow way."
"It's the slow way for me anyway," I said.
"Hush."
"Gran. I'm not going to heal."
"No," she said, and for one moment I saw her mouth shake. "I know that. You've never healed it. You sit still, and we'll sew you like anyone else."
