Chapter 18: Four Hundred Wolves
"Brant," his father said, very softly. "Sit down."
Brant didn't sit.
His hands were shaking at his sides, the same way they had shaken in the circle.
This time I knew what it was.
"My father wrote the words," he said. "I read them off a card he gave me in the truck."
He swallowed.
"I was told where to stand, and when to smile."
The tiers began to murmur.
"I said I'd found someone worth more," Brant said. "There was no one. The woman I was seen with didn't exist until four days afterward."
He lifted his eyes to the third tier.
The woman in green stood up and walked down the stone steps with her three pieces of paper held in front of her.
She laid them on the clerk's table one at a time.
"The seer's reading, dated the night of the circle," she said. "Alpha Colter's note to his seer, four days later. And a list of every date I was told to say I'd met him."
"Who are you?" asked the clerk.
"I'm the seer's daughter. I was placed."
She did not look at Brant.
"I was told the girl he rejected was a danger to him. She was a danger to nobody. She was a price."
The clerk read the note aloud.
When she reached the words worth more, a sound went through the hall that I had never heard four hundred wolves make.
"Forged," Colter said, but he said it a beat too late.
"It is in your hand, Alpha," said an old Alpha from the north table, quietly. "I have had your letters for thirty years."
"Brant," Colter said. "Tell them it's a lie."
