Chapter 15: The Interview Room
"From her," I said.
"That's what the report says."
"It's my mother's money. Larissa was the co-trustee."
"Then you'll want to come in and tell me that," the detective said. "Bring whatever you have. Monday the twenty-second, ten o'clock."
He gave me an address on Whitaker Avenue.
I went back to the table.
Everybody was looking at me.
"Who was it?" Maggie asked.
"The police," I said. "Larissa says I robbed her."
Wells put down his fork and didn't pick it up again.
I spent ten days making a binder.
Maggie bought it. It was purple, because it was the only color the drugstore had left.
I put the statements in it, in order, with colored tabs.
And one more thing, from my phone, that I printed at the copy shop on Girard.
A text from Larissa, four years ago in October.
"BREN I GOT THE SCHOLARSHIP!!! You can stop sending money!! I love you I love you I love you."
On Monday, Wells drove me to Whitaker Avenue in the van.
He'd worn his black suit. I didn't ask why.
"I'll be in the lobby," he said.
"You don't have to."
"I've got a wedding at four. I'm in the lobby until three."
The interview room was the size of my walk-in cooler.
A metal table. Two chairs on one side, one on the other. A clock with a cracked face.
The detective was a heavy man in his fifties with reading glasses on his head and another pair in his shirt pocket.
He had a mug that said WORLD'S OKAYEST GRANDPA.
He opened a thin folder.
"Ms. Delancey's statement," he said. "I'll read you the short version. You tell me where it's wrong."
"Okay."
"She says you and she were co-trustees of your mother's trust. She says that for four years you've been taking money out of it for yourself. She says on June fourth you froze the account so she couldn't stop you."
