Chapter 29: Sentencing
I read the letter, standing on the mat.
Then I put it on my mother's worktable and went back to work.
Wells found it there at six, when he came to walk me to the bus.
He read it. He folded it back up along its creases.
"Are you going to?"
"I'm going to speak," I said. "I don't know if it's for her."
He nodded once.
"I'll drive."
On Monday, November sixteenth, I sat in the second row of a courtroom on Filbert Street with my hands in my lap.
Wells sat on my left. Maggie sat on my right, in a dress, which I'd never seen.
"Don't look at me," she whispered. "It's itchy."
They brought Larissa in through a side door.
She was in a gray county jumpsuit, with her hands cuffed in front of her.
Her auburn hair was pulled back in a plain rubber band.
No lipstick.
I'd never seen her without lipstick.
She looked for me in the rows and found me.
Her eyes filled.
They always could.
The prosecutor read out the facts. A hundred and seventy-nine thousand, seven hundred and eighty-eight dollars.
