Chapter 17: I Didn't Say Let Go

Jonas drove through two red lights with Wren in the back seat and the baker's apron pressed between her knees.

Hallie was waiting at the ambulance doors in her scrubs. Jonas had called her from the car.

"Don't talk," Hallie said, already guiding the wheelchair. "Don't cry. Crying raises your pressure, and I'm not in the mood."

"I'm not crying."

"You're a little bit crying."

They put Wren in a curtained bay and took her blood pressure twice.

Jonas followed as far as the curtain. A nurse put a hand on his chest.

"Family only."

"I'm the father."

"He's the father," Hallie said, from inside. "Unfortunately. Let him in."

He came in and stood at the foot of the bed, flour still on his sleeves.

Wren turned her face to the wall.

The ultrasound machine was wheeled in. A young doctor squeezed cold gel onto her stomach, and the screen filled with gray.

Wren shut her eyes.

Then the speakers came on, fast and loud and steady.

Her breath went out of her all at once.

"There," the doctor said. "A hundred and forty-eight. That is a very strong heartbeat."

Jonas made a small sound, and put his hand over his mouth.

"The bleeding is from a low-lying placenta," the doctor went on. "It's sitting close to the cervix. It happens, and it often moves up by itself. But not if you're lifting trays."

"I lift trays for a living."

"Not for the next two weeks. No lifting, no standing for more than a few hours, and nothing strenuous." The doctor glanced at Jonas. "Nothing at all of any kind, until I scan her again."
