Seats 3A and 3B on the 8:00 Nozomi were two inches too close together, and Gojo's secretary had done it on purpose.
Tomoya took the window.
Ren took the aisle and put a canned coffee on Tomoya's tray table without comment.
It was hot, black, with one sugar.
Tomoya looked at it.
"Why did you buy me a coffee?"
"I was at the machine."
"You bought the one I drink."
"It's the only kind with sugar. Everybody drinks it."
Tomoya opened it, because he wasn't an idiot, and drank half before Shinagawa.
For forty minutes they argued with great conviction about whether the Daikoku renewal should lead with price or with the new cold-brew line.
Tomoya said price.
Ren said cold-brew.
They were both loud enough that a woman across the aisle moved to another car.
Somewhere around Nagoya Tomoya stopped arguing, because his eyes were shutting.
He hadn't slept since Thursday.
"Sleep," Ren said.
"I don't take orders from you."
