Chapter 13: The Flight Back

"I'll be there," Noah said.

Damian made a sound that shook the line.

"Okay," he said. "Okay. Six."

"Six."

Noah didn't sleep much that night.

The warden left on Boxing Day morning to see in the New Year at his daughter's.

He shook Noah's hand at the front door.

"Fire doors at ten," he said. "Meter on Mondays. Don't let anyone in you don't know."

"I won't."

"Damian Whelan rang me from Perth last night. He wants his room back till February. Hospital placement in January."

Noah kept his face very still.

"I said yes," the warden said. "Less paperwork."

Then he got into the blue Volvo and drove north.

At five Noah rang the only taxi in town.

It had a new windscreen.

The driver didn't talk about the fire. He talked about the cricket.

The airport was one long tin shed and a car park full of grasshoppers.

Noah stood at the wire fence and watched the little plane come down out of a pink sky.

The stairs folded out of its side.

A line of passengers came down them.

Damian was near the back.

No crutches.

A black brace laced up over his right ankle, and a limp, and a backpack.

He saw Noah at the fence and stopped on the tarmac.

Somebody behind him had to step around him.
