Chapter 14: Hush

Maddie found him on the kitchen floor on Tuesday night with his back against the island, still in his coat.

She sat down next to him in her Gophers shirt and put a plate of toast between them.

"Zack called me six times," she said.

"I know."

"He told me everything," Maddie said. "He sounded like he was dying."

"Good," Teddy said.

"Teddy."

"I'm not being cruel, Mads. I just don't have a nice thing to say."

She ate a corner of toast and chewed.

"I knew about the man," she said. "The cologne since September. The way you flinch when your phone buzzes. I figured, rich guy, bar, money, none of my business."

"You never said anything."

"You told me to stay out, so I stayed out." She nudged him with her shoulder. "But I'm not out anymore. Can I say two things?"

"Go."

"One," she said. "They're both idiots."

"Yes."

"Two. Zack sold himself for fifteen months so you could stay in school and never know." She ate another corner. "That's the dumbest, saddest, most loyal thing I've ever heard. And you're allowed to want to kill him anyway."

Teddy laughed, and it turned into something wet.

She put her arm around him and let him.

At ten he took the freight elevator up to the loft.
