Chapter 13: Fifteen Months
"Sit down, Teddy," Anders said.
"No."
"Please."
It was the first time Teddy had ever heard the word from him.
He sat, slowly, on the edge of the chair, with water dripping off the table onto the floor.
Zack stayed standing.
"I met him fifteen months ago," Zack said. "At a hotel bar in Madison, the week before fall classes. I was nineteen. My mom had been laid off from the paper mill, and my tuition was due, and I was working two jobs and failing calculus."
Teddy didn't move.
"He bought me a drink. He said he'd pay my tuition and a monthly allowance, and I'd be his. I said yes."
"Yes to what?" Teddy's voice was flat. "Say it."
"To this." Zack's eyes flicked to the bed visible past the glass partition, and away. "To the bed. To that bed. For fifteen months. Five thousand dollars a month, on the first."
The words hung in the air.
"You were his sugar baby."
"I was," Zack said.
"The whole time you stopped answering," Teddy said.
"The whole time."
Teddy looked at Anders.
Anders sat very straight at the head of the table, with his hands folded and his eyes on the wood.
