Zack held the freight elevator door with his boot while Teddy stepped in, and he didn't look at the buttons.
He pressed the top one without being told.
Teddy noticed, and let it go.
He had told Zack only that his "friend" lived in a converted mill and wanted to meet Zack.
Zack had said "Okay" in a flat voice and put on his one good sweater.
The doors opened on the loft, warm and gold, with the table set for three and the river black in the windows.
Anders stood at the stove in a gray sweater, with a wooden spoon.
"Zack," he said.
"Mr. Holmgren."
"Anders."
"Anders," Zack said, and the name sounded wrong in his mouth, careful and stiff.
Teddy looked from one to the other.
"You two know each other?"
"No," Anders said.
