I got her back to my loft by taxi at one in the morning, and I didn't say a word the whole way.
The broken door still hung from one hinge.
I shoved the crate inside with my foot and left it in the middle of the floor.
Margot stood on the threshold in her black dress.
She looked like someone who had been hit very hard and hadn't yet been told where.
"Come in," I said. "Close it."
She pushed what was left of the door shut.
"Every word," I said. "You told two hundred people it was true."
"It was."
"You said you'd do it again."
"I would."
"Why?"
"Because he was going to say it anyway, and I wanted it to be mine."
I laughed, and it came out ugly.
"You've had a lot of practice with that room."
She flinched.
It was a small movement, but I had been waiting four years to see it, and it didn't feel the way I had pictured it.
