Chapter 29: Departures

Three months ago Willa had come home through this airport and found one driver holding a card.

At half past four in the morning she walked through the same doors, and there were four people with her.

Her father carried her bag. He had insisted, and he held it against his chest with both arms.

Her mother walked beside him in a wool coat, with a thermos and a fuzz of new hair under her scarf.

Auntie, the cook, brought up the rear with a paper bag that smelled of ginger.

"It's nine days," Willa said. "You didn't need to come."

"We know how long it is," said her mother.

"It's a long way to go for a bag of knives," said her father.

"They're good knives."

"Then they're worth the trip."

At the check-in desk he set the bag on the scale very gently.

Willa watched him do it, and her eyes stung.

Nobody had seen her off three years ago. Nobody had known she was going.

Auntie pressed the paper bag into her hands.

"Ginger biscuits. Eat them on the plane, and don't let that country thin you out again."

"I won't."

"You will. You'll forget to eat." Auntie sniffed. "Come home fed."

Her mother waited until the others had gone to find coffee.

She took Willa's elbow and turned her toward the wall of glass, where the dark runways were beginning to gray.

"Well?" she said.

"Well, what?"

"Did he say it?"

Willa looked at her boarding pass.

"No."

"Did you?"

"I said it first."

"Good." Her mother's grip tightened. "Your grandmother told me once that was the only way with the men in this family. You say it first, and you stay in the room."
