Chapter 13: Say It to My Face

"I saw his truck," Reuben had said at the dike gate, so low that I almost missed it. "In September. I should have told you."

I carried that sentence out through the gate, and down the sand road, and past three hundred silent wolves.

I carried it until the moon went down and the Pull let go of my knees.

Now I had both fists knotted in the front of his coat, and I had him pinned against the side of his own truck bed.

"Say it to my face," I said.

He did not look away.

"Three nights," he said. "I was on the fire break behind the pump house."

"And?"

"The gold truck sat outside your sister's cottage with its lights off. It left before four. Every night."

"You knew what it was," I said.

"I knew."

"You knew in September." My voice cracked on it.

"Yes."

"And you stood on the wrong side of the dike and watched me walk into that water in my grandmother's dress," I said.

"Yes."

"You let me say the vows."

"I didn't let you," he said. "I stood there and I did not stop you. That is worse, and I know it."

I wanted to hit him.

I hit his chest with my fist instead, once, hard enough to hurt my hand, and he took it and did not step back.

"Why?" I said.

"A Stray who speaks against an Alpha is run off the Barrens. I told myself that was the reason."

"It was the smaller one."

"The bigger one is that I had watched you for a year," he said.

"And?"

"I thought if I said it, you would hate the man who said it."

"I do hate him," I said.

"Good." He said it rough. "Hate me properly. I'd rather have that than your pity."

I stared at him.

The cold came up through the gravel, and my breath smoked between us.

"You said till morning," I said.

"I did."

"You said the truck is mine and you never ask for after. Here's the truck. Tell me to take it."

His jaw worked.

"The keys are in the cab," he said. "You have a Standing behind you and a pack that heard you."

"And?"

"If you want your mother's kitchen, go."

"Is that what you want?" I said.

"No."

"Then say what you want."
