Chapter 21: I Do

"Gwen," Reuben said, into the microphone, in a voice that begged. "Not now."

"Why not?" she said. "You scheduled everything else."

The microphone squealed.

Someone in the back row laughed once and stopped.

Gwen turned to the retired judge in his robe.

"Please continue," she said.

"Miss Lasker, under the circumstances."

"Ask me."

He looked at the board, at the cameras, at me.

Then he did the only thing a man in a robe can do, and read from his card.

"Gwendolyn Lasker, do you take this man to be your husband?"

"I do," she said, loud and clear, to three hundred people.

Reuben took one stunned step toward her.

"Thank you," Gwen said. "Now I'd like to be heard."

She lifted the trailing ribbon on her bouquet, and out of the stems she drew a fat, folded roll of paper.

"I went through his study at two this morning," she said. "He told me I'd never need a key."

"Those are private," Reuben said.

"Not anymore."

She smoothed the first page against her stomach.

"This is a letter, dated October twenty-first, four days after the gala. It begins, Dear Tavi, I have made a terrible mistake. It ends, forever yours."
