Chapter 13: The Red Toolbox
Her father woke at six, when the window over the bed was going grey, and for a few minutes he knew exactly where he was.
Maeve was stiff in the armchair after a night of not sleeping.
He turned his head on the pillow and looked at the crack in the ceiling he had never gotten around to fixing.
Then he looked at her.
"This isn't Harbor House," he said.
"No, Dad. It's the house. Mom brought you home last night."
"Did she ask me?"
"No."
His jaw set, and for a second he looked exactly as he had when she was twelve and had broken a window.
"I need my toolbox," he said.
"Dad, you need to rest."
"The red one. It's in the cellar, under the stairs, behind the paint." He gripped her wrist. "Go now, before your mother's up. I put something in it for you, after the first stroke."
"What is it?"
"Your mother doesn't go down there. She says the cellar smells like me."
Maeve kissed his forehead and went.
At the front door, Niall stood on the porch with his cap in his hand.
Alexis had let him in without a word and gone back upstairs, and he waited at the head of the cellar steps while Maeve went down alone.
The toolbox was where her father had said, behind two cans of grey porch paint.
The top tray held fuses, wire nuts and a roll of electrical tape gone soft with age.
Under the tray, taped flat to the bottom, was a long white envelope.
MAEVE was printed across it in her father's square capital letters.
She pulled it free and read standing under the bare bulb.
There were two papers from a lawyer at his union hall, signed and witnessed six years ago.
They said that if her father could no longer decide for himself, Maeve would decide his care and handle his money.
