Chapter 4: The Pearls

Maeve took the first train to Somerville after her shift ended at seven.

She knew the address, because she had paid three months of the rent on it.

Alexis's building was a brick walk-up with a broken buzzer, and the front door was propped open with a flowerpot.

Maeve climbed to the third floor and knocked.

Alexis opened the door in a silk robe with her hair loose, and she was wearing the pearls.

She was wearing them at seven in the morning, over a bathrobe, in her own kitchen.

"Maeve," she said, and her face crumpled before Maeve had said a word. "I'm so sorry. I've been trying to call you since Wednesday."

"You haven't called once."

"I wrote you a message and I didn't send it."

"That's the same as not calling."

Behind Alexis, Waylon was at the stove in his undershirt, pouring coffee into two mugs.

He had moved into this place in a day and a half.

He put the pot down when he saw her. "You can't just show up here."

"I'm here for the pearls."

Alexis's hand went to her throat. "Grandma wanted me to have them."

"She left them to me."

"She left you everything." Alexis's eyes were already wet. "You got the apartment and the pearls and the china. You got her whole life, and I got a card."

"I got the apartment because I moved in with her for two years and washed her every morning at the end."

"I was nineteen!"

"You were nineteen and you visited twice."
