Solveig's POV

The first snow came in the night, and by morning the ridge was white to the creek.

I stood at the kitchen window with my coffee and watched Nels lead the team across the yard.

He had them in harness already, a matched pair of sorrels with frosted manes.

Their breath went up in two clouds.

They were hitched to my father's old bobsled, and the runners squeaked on the snow.

Nels looked up at the window and lifted a hand.

I put the cup down and found my boots.

"Hay's in the creek field," he said when I came out. "Hilda's grandsons are coming at noon to help stack it."

"You want to haul it by horse."

"I want to see if I can still drive a team," he said.

"You've never driven a team."

"Per showed me when I was fifteen," Nels said. "He said I'd either learn it or be thrown, and I wasn't thrown."

He handed me the lines.

They were stiff with cold.
