Chapter 20: The Long Frame

I was waiting on the couch with my laptop open when Romy came back on Monday night.

Her hair was wet from the shower.

"You're doing spreadsheets in my studio," she said.

"I brought snacks."

"That makes it better." She dropped her towel on a chair. "What's the spreadsheet?"

"Come see."

She sat beside me, damp and warm and smelling of her sandalwood soap, and looked at the screen.

I had labeled the tab LISBON.

"Rent, per month, in euros," I said. "A flat near the river that Dee found on a friend's list. My firm has agreed to let me do the client books remotely for three months. I have a flight, a return date, and a line for my father's phone calls."

Romy read it slowly.

Her hand went to her mouth.

"You didn't ask me first," she said.

"I did the arithmetic first. I'm asking now."

I turned to face her.

"Romy Tillery. I would like to go to Lisbon with you. For three months, and then we'll decide the rest together, with both of us talking. Do you want me to come?"

She looked at me.

She had that open, unguarded look I'd seen only twice, on the lawn and in the pictures.

Her eyes filled.

"I've wanted to ask you since the truck," she said.

"So ask."

"Ivy, will you come to Lisbon?"

"Yes."

She laughed and kissed me at the same time, and the laptop slid off my knees onto the floor.
