Chapter 10: Osaka
The inspection began on Friday at nine, with Director Sugimoto standing behind the chief's chair.
Chief Takamine opened Sota's top drawer and found stamps, a stapler, and a packet of rice crackers.
"Crackers are not a violation."
"They are a smell," said the Director.
The chief opened the second drawer, which held eleven pens, all black.
Then he held out his hand without looking up.
"Phone."
Sota gave it to him with both hands.
His own pulse sounded to him like a drum solo.
The chief tapped the screen, and the screen showed a folder named CLAIMS REFERENCE.
He opened it.
Inside was one icon, a small red pen.
He pressed it, and the app opened on a profile with a username that read StallFour and a list of eighty-three comments.
His face did not move.
He did not blink. His pen did not click. The Director leaned over his shoulder, breathing through his mustache.
"What is that?"
"A flashcard application," the chief said, "for the Property Claims Act."
"Show me."
He scrolled, slowly, down eighty-three comments, each addressed to Sensei, until he reached the top.
Sota watched the back of his neck go from white to pink, in a clean line.
"Question seventeen," the chief read, in an even voice. "Please draw the chief's hands in the next chapter."
"That's the article about fire damage?"
"It is a mnemonic."
"It has a great deal of enthusiasm."
"He is a conscientious young man, Director."
The Director sniffed. "His ears are red."
"He is ashamed of his study habits," the chief said, and handed back the phone, and wrote CLEAN on the form.
