Chapter 8: Rule One
On Monday at 8:38, Sota got into the lift in the lobby, and the chief got in behind him.
The doors closed.
They stood a full meter apart, facing the numbers.
"Good morning, Chief."
"Ichinose."
"Rule one, Chief."
"I am aware of rule one."
The lift climbed past the third floor, and the sixth, and then it shuddered between the ninth and the tenth and stopped.
The lights went out.
A dim red bulb came on over the buttons.
Sota pressed fourteen. Nothing happened.
He pressed the alarm, and a tinny voice spoke from the wall.
"This is building security. A small tremor has triggered the safety brake. Please wait. It will take ten minutes."
"Understood," said the chief.
"Is everyone all right in there?"
"Everything is in order."
The speaker clicked off.
Sota looked at the ceiling. The chief looked at the floor. In the red light, neither of them looked at the other.
