Chapter 12: No Fund

The pie was apple, and Orlin cut it without looking at either of us.

The kitchen behind the shop had a table, a stove, a calendar from the Co-op and a window onto the salvage yard.

Sunday light came through the window in a clean yellow square.

Levi had gone out to the garden behind the wrecking yard to pick the last tomatoes.

I sat at the table in my coat.

Orlin put a slice down in front of me and a fork beside it and sat across from me, slowly, with his bad hip stuck out sideways.

"Eat," he said.

I took one bite.

"There's no rescue fund," Orlin said.

I put the fork down.

"There was one," he said. "A coffee can on a shelf in 1998. It was empty by 2001. There's been no fund since, and there's no fund now. Nobody in this county has ever been covered by this shop for free."

"What are you saying?" I said.

"I'm saying he paid it," Orlin said.

"The tow was seventy-five dollars. The rebuild at the shop in Hillsboro was twenty-eight hundred and fifty. The co-op wanted four hundred and twelve to turn the lights back on at your mother's house, and he paid that on a Thursday, in cash, on his lunch. Groceries since. The premium on your car insurance. It comes to four thousand, three hundred and eighty dollars."
