Chapter 11: The Wheat Field

The tailgate was down and the bed of his pickup was cold steel ribbed under my knees.

I was on top of him with my jeans around one ankle.

The sun had gone down behind the grain elevators and left a long red strip along the edge of the world.

Over us the sky was going from orange to dark blue, with one star out.

All around us the cut wheat stood in stubble to the horizon, pale and sharp, and the wind combed it.

There was no one.

No road, no house, no light, for a mile in any direction except the one yellow lamp on a far pole.

"Here," I'd said, when he turned onto the field road, and he had parked in the middle of the field without asking.

The Camry was done.

It was back from Hillsboro with its new transmission, sitting by the shop door with the key under the mat.

I hadn't driven it yet.

I didn't want to think about that now.

I braced my hands flat on his chest and rode him.

He was lying on a folded tarp with his shirt pushed up and his jeans open, with his hands on my hips.

The muscles under my palms jumped each time I came down.

"Slower," he said.

"No," I said.

"Carla," he said.

"You don't get to say slower. You get to say thank you."

He laughed.

It cracked out of him, short and broken, and he dug his fingers into my hips.

I went faster.

It was ugly and fast and unashamed.

I slammed down on him with the whole weight of my body, again and again, with my hair in my face and my breath coming in grunts.

The truck rocked on its springs and the tailgate chain rattled.

He pulled me down harder with every stroke.
