Chapter 10: The Shop
On Tuesday at ten in the morning my husband's gray Buick pulled into the lot of Janzen & Son Towing.
I was at the parts shelf with a clipboard Orlin had given me, to look busy.
I watched the Buick through the office window and felt every drop of blood leave my face.
Levi was under the old wrecker three feet from me.
Only his boots showed.
"Levi," I said, very low.
"I see him," he said.
"Don't come out."
"I wasn't going to."
Kent got out of the car in a pressed blue button-down and a quarter-zip vest, with a trimmed beard and a thermos in one hand and a folded check in the other.
He stood a moment in the gravel, looking at the place with his head a little to one side.
I put the clipboard down and walked out to meet him, and my knees held.
"Carla." He kissed my cheek.
His beard was cool and smelled of the cedar soap he'd used for ten years.
"I brought you coffee," he said. "The good beans. You said the shop coffee was terrible."
