Chapter 17: The Rollback
Orlin set the paper sack on the bench and took the chain in his fist and rolled the bay door down himself.
It rattled all the way to the floor.
Then he went out through the office and shut that door too.
Levi put his forehead against my shoulder blade, and neither of us could stop laughing for a minute.
Supper was ham and boiled potatoes, and nobody said a word about the door.
On Sunday morning Levi drove the rollback to Hays, and I rode in the cab beside him with my hands in my lap.
Kent had left the front door unlocked.
He had stacked my things in the front hall in nine boxes and labeled each one in his square black hand.
CARLA, BOOKS. CARLA, WINTER. CARLA, KITCHEN.
On top of the last one sat the casserole dish from the freezer, with a sticky note: 350 for an hour.
I stood in the hall of the house where I had lived for twelve years and cried for a few minutes.
Levi carried every box out and strapped them down on the bed with a yellow ratchet strap, and he never once came into the kitchen.
That was the day.
That night, after we unloaded them at my mother's house, he drove the rollback back to the shop.
He parked it in the middle of the yard under the pole light.
He did not turn the engine off.
"Get up there," I said.
"What?"
"On the bed. Both of us."
He looked at the empty flatbed, and at the strap lying coiled on the tailgate.
I took the strap off the rail myself.
I held it out to him.
"Tie my wrists," I said.
"Carla."
"I'm asking. You know the difference now."
He took the strap.
