Chapter 18: The Fund
Orlin made pot roast, because it was the only supper he knew how to make.
He set the pan in the middle of the table with a folded dish towel under it.
It was my first day at the dental office in Hillsboro, and I still smelled of mint polish.
I had worked the morning, and then I'd walked across the street at lunch to a lawyer's office over the hardware store.
I put my fork down.
"I signed a petition today," I said. "For divorce."
Levi stopped chewing.
Orlin kept his eyes on the pan.
"The lawyer is a woman with her glasses on a beaded chain," I said. "She says Kansas makes you wait sixty days. Then the judge sets a date. Kent gets the papers this week."
"You didn't have to tell us," Levi said.
"I wanted somebody to know who wasn't him."
Orlin lifted a slab of roast onto my plate with the serving fork.
"That's a hard thing," he said. "I'm sorry it's come to it."
"I'm not sorry it came to it. I'm sorry it came this way."
"That's about right," Orlin said. "That's where you ought to be."
He wiped his hands on the dish towel.
He looked across the table at his grandson, and he did not look away for a while.
"Boy won't tell you," he said to me. "So I'm going to."
"Grandpa," Levi said.
"Sit still."
"Grandpa."
"I said sit still, Levi." He had never raised his voice, and he didn't now. "You're about to give her your money by the handful, and she's about to tear it up, and you'll both be proud. She ought to know whose it is."
