Chapter 19: The Flint Hills
He said no to the paychecks every day that week.
Each time he said it a little louder, and each time I said it was mine to give.
On Friday after work I drove the Ranger to the shop.
The Camry sat where it had been for two weeks, with the key under the mat.
I stood and looked at it.
The debt didn't live in the car, I thought.
It lived in a number I was going to pay, and the car was a car.
I got in and turned the key.
The engine caught on the first try and settled into a purr I had never heard out of it in ten years.
Levi came out of the office wiping his hands.
I rolled the window down.
"Get in," I said.
"It's your car."
"I know whose car it is. Get in, driver."
He got in, and he put the seat back as far as it would go, and his knees still came up past the glove box.
I drove us out of Marion on the east road with the heater on and the radio off.
The shifts were smooth and the engine was quiet.
He didn't say anything, and the way he watched the dash told me he was listening to the engine.
The pavement turned to gravel, and the gravel turned to a ranch road with grass growing up the middle.
The Flint Hills rose around us in the last of the light, long and bare and brown-gold.
There was not a tree on them and not a house for miles.
"Turn here," he said.
It was a pull-off on the crest of a rise, with a cattle gate and a view down into a valley that was already dark.
I put the car in park and cut the headlights.
The grass moved all the way to the horizon.
The first stars came out over it.
