Chapter 6: Wedding Night

Giles's penthouse had two bedrooms, one at each end of a long hallway.

The doorman carried my two bags up, and Giles tipped him and shut the door.

Then we stood in his entry, in our wedding clothes, with nothing to say.

"Yours is the one on the left," he said. "The lock works from the inside."

"I'm not worried about the lock."

"No. I'm sure you're not."

He took off his jacket and hung it on the hook.

I watched his shoulders move under the white shirt.

I had been very careful all day not to watch them.

"Thank you for the loan," I said.

"It's in your account. Twelve million. The transfer cleared an hour ago."

"I know. I checked on the way up."

"Of course you did."

He smiled at that, not a lot, but I saw it.

It changed his face.

It made him look younger and a little tired, and I had to look at the floor.

"Good night, Hallie."

"Good night."

I walked down the hall toward my room.

At my door I stopped.

I had meant to go in.

Instead I turned around, and he was still standing at the end of the corridor, with one hand on the wall.

He hadn't moved.

"You're watching me," I said.

"I am."

"Why?"

"I'm trying to decide whether you want me to stop."

I felt the heat climb my throat.

I was twenty-four years old, and ten years of experience were in my head, and none of it helped me with this man.

I walked back.

I stopped in front of him, close enough that I had to tip my head back.
