Chapter 13: The Summons
The knock came at six in the morning.
Sebastian was out of the chair before I had finished sitting up.
We had slept on the study floor in a nest of his coat and my torn shirt.
I was wearing his dress jacket and nothing else.
"Major Rook," said a voice through the door. "Orders from the Commandant."
He pulled on trousers and opened it two inches.
A guard stood there with a cream envelope and a face that did not want to be there.
"Both of you, sir. Her office. Now."
The envelope had a black wax seal pressed with a stag's head.
I had seen that seal on a dais.
I got dressed in two minutes and a pair of borrowed socks.
The Commandant's office was on the ground floor of the main hall, and the Commandant herself stood at the window with her back to us.
She was a tall woman, gray-haired, straight-backed, sixty or so.
